Vivian Victor Strength Agility Intellect Willpower 7d 4d 4b 5d Hand Size: 2 (10) Edge: 0 Origin: Lacking ascendant capabilities to speak of, Vivian Victor can readily be considered a normal human. He regularly engages in combat thanks to his job, however, conflict he has survived thus far thanks to the comprehensive training and top-of-the-line police equipment he has access to. Powers: (none) Hindrances / Augmentations: Bluntness: having grown a bit jaded over the years, Vivian has a hard time editing himself these days, to the point that it gets him in trouble both on and off the job. He is at Willpower zero (0) on card play required to rein it in and play nice for any length of time. Slow Healing: decades of increasingly poor self-care has made Vivian woefully out of shape, and as such he recovers from injuries much slower than his capabilities would otherwise indicate. Vivian can only attempt to replace cards lost to damage once every four turns. Equipment: Body Armor (s): like most police these days, Vivian makes use of a bullet-resistant vest while on the job. This item acts to transmute lethal bullet damage into bashing damage instead, reducing its effectiveness by 2 in the process. Bullets still hurt, but they're survivable. Body Camera (i): a recent addition to his equipment loadout, Vivian is required to wear and operate a body camera while on the job. It records everything he does while he's working, which is uploaded to a central computer when docked to recharge after every shift. Grenades (i): Vivian can toss these intensity 10 devices anywhere within near missile distance of his person. Smoke grenades fill the area within near missile distance with obscuring smoke, while stun grenades dazzle foes upon a successful Grenades (strength) action. Helmet (s): when he's expecting serious trouble, Vivian breaks out his helmet. This advanced implement provides his cranium intensity 4, or +1, protection against physical assault, and comes equipped with a visor that gives his eyes -2 of that protection as well. Radio (i): Vivian carries a radio that can send signals to, and receive them from, a central base. It works with intensity 4 ability, having an ideal maximum range of ten miles, though as is the case with smartphones, local geography and infrastructure can reduce this greatly. Shotgun (a): the primary weapon Vivian wields when on SWAT calls, he has reduced the length of its barrels such that it is only accurate within near missile distance of his person. However, it can be loaded with a vast array of ammunition, some of which is much more lethal than others. Vivian's shotgun can fire birdshot to inflict his Agility +4 in damage in a thirty degree arc, buckshot to inflict his Agility +5 damage to adjacent targets, slugs to inflict his Agility +6 in damage to a single foe, or rubber bullets to inflict his Agility +5 in bashing damage. Sidearm (a): when doing conventional police work, Vivian instead makes use of his trusty sidearm. This one-handed weapon can discharge a single round to inflict his Agility +4 in damage, or a three-round burst of such to inflict his Agility +5 in damage. Smartphone (i): while he often relies on a radio on the clock, Vivian carries his smartphone wherever he goes. This hand-held supercomputer can transmit and receive radio signals with intensity 3 power, which gives it a maximum transception range of five miles under ideal conditions. Taser (R) (s): this intensity 10 weapon is built to incapacitate targets. It fires darts within near missile distance that, if they can inflict their +2 slashing damage, deliver a stunning jolt of high voltage that will stun targets on a successful Taser (strength) contingent action. Zip Ties (s): instead of handcuffs, Vivian uses tactical zip ties to restrain perpetrators. While made from conventional plastics, they prevent others from moving or escaping with intensity 10 ability, doing so by preventing them from leveraging their full Strength to break free. Skills: Boxing (s): should he be subject to violence and not have his gadgets handy, Vivian can defend himself while unarmed. He may divide his pre-card play action score between two unarmed melee attacks, the second of which he may attempt as a contingent action. Criminology (i): though he never finished his degree, Vivian is a competent criminologist thanks to copious self-directed study. He may reduce the difficulty of card play required when attempting to determine the methodology or mindset of criminals as they plan or commit crimes. Guns (a): since he regularly faces potentially lethal violence, Vivian spends much of his time at work maintaining this skill. As such, he can fire any standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol at one difficulty level lower than is usually necessary. Law (i): as a part of his responsibilities on the job, Vivian has learned the ins and outs of the legal system. He knows what is and isn't a crime, and he should benefit from a reduced difficulty on any card play related to the law and various legal matters. Law Enforcement (w): as a veteran law enforcement officer, Vivian naturally possesses this talent. It provides him numerous additional skills and contacts, and since he's still a policeman, he can legally carry firearms and arrest lawbreakers discovered within his jurisdiction. Trivia / Crime 2 (i): obsessed with them his entire life, Vivian has studied mobsters since he was a child. Bolstering his love with extensive research, personal experience, and professional training, he may resolve applicable card play at a reduced difficulty, using Intellect or Willpower. Contacts: Having been a policeman for decades, Vivian has countless contacts related to his occupation. Some of these are fellow police officers and the agency that employs him, while others include various informants and other illicit associates, and still more are people who love 'his' books. Calling: Soldier: Vivian views enforcement of the law as an end unto itself. Sure, he's managed to rack up numerous fringe benefits for doing so, but the reason he became (and remains) a policeman is because he feels it is an important. That and his very self-image is tied up in his job. Costume: Vivian is on the job much of the time, or simply plays up his role as a police officer. As such, he's usually in uniform or some variation therein, often needlessly wearing his body armor and assorted SWAT gadgets. When he isn't working, Vivian just wears sweatpants and a tank top. Personality: Vivian carries himself with the unearned confidence his badge allows. Sure, he's been a cop for decades, but his reasons for joining the police are dubious at best, and he isn't above enjoying some of the less... savory opportunities that arise for a man in his particular position. While he still acts as though he's in peak condition, Vivian is undoubtedly aging and past his prime, but then most of Vivian's life has seen him engage in some level of performance to those around him. Thankfully, Vivian hasn't managed to push his luck too far yet. Real Name: Vivian Victor Occupation: SWAT officer Legal Status: citizen of the United States with no known criminal record Marital Status: divorced Alias(es), if any: none Group Affiliation: his police department Height: 6' 1" Hair: brown and gray, balding Eyes: brown Weight: 270 lbs Other Distinguishing Characteristics: none Story: Vivian always wanted to enforce the law. His young mind was forever shaped by watching mobster movies with his dad as a child, and Vivian always imagined himself busting organized crime rings of all kinds while growing up. Though a bit unrealistic, Vivian stuck with this goal. Obsessed with mobsters, Vivian studied them in his youth, doing plenty of research even before he had access to the Internet. Once that global network was active, however, Vivian was able to dig deeper into the subject of his fascination, and became an amateur expert on it. Going to college to gain a criminal justice degree, initially wanting to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Vivian nonetheless dropped out when he managed to secure a position in his metropolitan police department. And Vivian flourished as a policeman, after a fashion. Gaining practical skill with crime and its elimination, Vivian was living his dream, even if on a local level. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic, Vivian eventually earned his way into his city's Special Weapons and Tactics team, which entailed further training and crime-fighting experience. With his extensive, life-long research and years on the job enforcing the law, Vivian began to write books about organized crime. Quickly hailed as an expert on the subject, he began to appear on assorted news programs as they discussed crime, particularly after notable arrests. Vivian's big professional break came after he busted 'Hairy' Harry Maxwell, a low-level leg-breaker for a regional crime syndicate. Instead of dragging him into jail, however, Vivian came to an arrangement with the thug, exchanging information about assorted criminals for his freedom. This led to his attempting to write fictional accounts of assorted criminals Harry squealed on, as well as the criminal organizations they worked for. While Vivian is great at setting the stage, though, his storytelling is awful, so he ultimately had to rely upon a ghost writer for this. So, between his actual police work, work on news analysis programs as an expert, writing his non-fiction organized crime books, and uh, plotting his fictional organized crime books, Vivian keeps busy. Of course, he hasn't had time to squeeze exercise into his day for decades. And it really shows. While a large and imposing man, Vivian has packed on plenty of pounds over the years, and is either unwilling or unable to shake them. A lousy diet and general inactivity will do that. He can still maintain his department's minimum fitness standards, however. Somehow. Legal Hoopajoob: I offer my Quick Action Resolution Deck text under the Creative Commons Attribution license.
